Trip Dates: 2008-02-21 – 2008-02-22
Hi everyone. On the way from Flores to Antigua, we stopped in Semuc Champey, which is located a two-hour drive from Cobán, in the heart of Guatemala. I had an active day here, where we hiked, climbed, and swam through an underground maze of caves. The caves are partially filled with water, so you have to climb, lower yourself up and down, and sometimes swim to get through.
Afterwards, we hiked up a mountain to a viewpoint overlooking the waterfalls and river at Semuc Champey. The river consists of a series of freshwater pools, and after the hike, it was great to take a refreshing dip in the clear mountain water. We finished off by rappelling down a small waterfall using a wooden ladder and jumping the last couple of meters into a pool below. Fun stuff!

I stayed at the hostel “El Retiro” in Lanquín, which I can highly recommend. You stay in bungalows surrounded by incredibly idyllic nature. I’ve just arrived in Antigua now, where I’ll relax for a few days and maybe eventually hike another volcano.
Take care for now!
