Trip Dates: 2008-02-27 – 2008-03-01
The past three days I’ve spent in the village of San Pedro La Laguna, located on Lake Atitlán, about two hours north of Antigua. The nature here is absolutely stunning. The view from my hotel room is of a large idyllic lake, a majestic mountain range, and two giant volcanoes stretching toward the sky on either side of the lake.
In San Pedro, you can spend your time kayaking on the lake, hiking mountains and volcanoes, soaking in hot springs, or simply relaxing in a hammock at the hotel. Prices here are incredibly low. For example, I’ve paid 50 NOK per night for a simple room with a bathroom at a hotel overlooking the lake. A piece of beef with guacamole, beans, and tortillas costs about 5 NOK, and yesterday I got a haircut for around 10 Norwegian kroner.
Yesterday we took a trip to the somewhat larger town of Panajachel, located at the other end of the lake. The town has a large market with an amazing selection of handmade items and clothing in traditional Guatemalan colors. It also has a nature reserve with lots of monkeys, coatis, and other fun animals and birds.
This afternoon I returned to Antigua. I’ll stay here through the weekend before heading to Granada in Nicaragua on Tuesday.
