Trip Dates: 2008-02-23 – 2008-02-27
I have spent a few days in Antigua now. Antigua is a charming old colonial town where characteristic small adobe houses, each painted in a different color, are packed closely together. The town is surrounded by three volcanoes, each between 2,500 and 4,000 meters high, and they can be seen from anywhere in the city.
I traveled here with, among others, two Dutch girls who are musicians and are touring Latin America playing live music at various clubs. I also reunited with two girls from Guatemala City whom I met on the flight from Amsterdam to Mexico City last year.
On Tuesday, I went on a trip to Pacaya Volcano, which is 2,552 meters high and currently very active. We hiked up to a crater where we were met with the incredible sight of rivers of flowing lava. We took tons of photos and videos, and some people roasted marshmallows over the lava. We watched the sunset from the top of the volcano and made our way back down with the help of headlamps. Truly an unforgettable experience.
I’ve made a slight change to my travel plans. Since I was getting a bit tired of day-long bus rides on winding, rough roads in Central America, I bought a plane ticket to Nicaragua for Tuesday. So I’ll be skipping Honduras and will instead have an extra week in Guatemala. The plan is to visit the villages around Lake Atitlán before catching my flight to Managua, Nicaragua.
