I’m sitting in my hostel in the charming Barrio Antiguo, the historic heart of Monterrey. This is Mexico’s third-largest city—a vibrant, modern metropolis just a short drive from the Texas border. My hostel is only steps away from the Macroplaza, the largest plaza in Latin America, home to the elegant Palacio de Gobierno, several museums, and leafy parks. I arrived here last Sunday and went straight to the Feria de León, a huge annual festival in León that draws hundreds of thousands of visitors every day. It’s a lively mix of markets, food in every imaginable variety, rides, bars, and restaurants for every taste. I went there with my friends Joel and Fabiola, whom I know from my stay here in 2005.

On Friday, February 1, I flew with Alaska Airlines from San Francisco via Los Angeles to Mexico City. I checked into Hotel Toledo, just around the corner from the Palacio de Bellas Artes, right in the heart of Mexico City’s Centro Histórico
